How would you react if someone with no experience in the world of public education who sent her children to private schools entered your classroom to make decisions for you?
That's exactly what will happen if Betsy DeVos is confirmed as U.S. Secretary of Education. A Senate confirmation hearing is set for Jan. 11. DeVos personifies the threat to public education from those who would defund and privatize our schools. She has spent two decades championing the expansion of poor-performing charter schools and vouchers at the expense of our neighborhood public schools.
Stand up. Say no. Call your U.S. Senators Rob Portman and Sherrod Brown to reject the DeVos nomination.
Call Sen. Portman - 202-224-3353
Call Sen. Sherrod Brown - 202- 224-2315
When his office staff answers the phone, explain that you live in Ohio and you are calling to ask that the senator reject the DeVos nomination. If you are an educator, share that with the person who answers and explain why it is important that people who make decisions about our public schools have experience in public education.
If no one answers, leave a voicemail message.
DeVos has zero experience. None. She has spent her career fighting against our treasured public schools. She has never worked in a public school. She sent her children to private school. The Secretary of Education's role is to support and strengthen our valued public schools, not hurt them by expanding poor-performing charters and vouchers.
Call your U.S. Senators Rob Portman and Sherrod Brown to reject the DeVos nomination. Tell them that our public schools need to be supported and strengthened and DeVos has no experience doing that. Thank you for taking a moment to make these calls.
