Release: Ohio teacher leader represents U.S. at international summit

(March 8, 2016) Ohio Federation of Teachers President Melissa Cropper joined Acting U.S. Secretary of Education John King on the U.S. delegation to the 6th International Summit on the Teaching Profession (ISTP) March 3-4 in Berlin.
 
Official delegations consisted of four members. The other members of the U.S. delegation were Lily Eskelen Garcia, president of the National Education Association, and Chris Minnich, executive director of the Council of Chief State School Officers.
 
The ISTP is a highly ranked international educational congress, where ministers of Europe, North America and the Asian-Pacific region as well as representatives of educational groups and teacher unions and other practical experienced representatives come together.
 
This year's summit focused on teachers’ professional learning and growth: Creating the conditions to achieve quality teaching for excellent learning outcomes. 
 
"It is important for American educators to see how education is delivered in other countries," said OFT President Melissa Cropper. "An important takeaway from this international summit is that I was able to see that most other countries see the value in strong and authentic collaboration between school teachers, school administrators and policymakers. 
 
"In the U.S., ESSA provides great potential for all states to make significant improvements in education. Ohio must ensure that educators have significant input into how our state reshapes how our children are educated. It is educators, the people who are in the schools and classrooms with students every day, who can provide the best insight," Cropper said.
 
Sessions addressed the following questions:
Drawing the lessons from previous Teaching Summits: what competencies – skills, knowledge and dispositions – do successful teachers require?
Which policies help foster teachers’ competencies so that they are effectively prepared for teaching?
Implementing policies which promote teachers’ professional learning and growth: what are the challenges and opportunities?
 
Pre- and post-summit activities provided opportunities for international participants to learn more about the German education system and to get in contact with various education stakeholders. Cropper visited a German school where refugee children attended "welcome classes" to learn a new language and help orient them to their new homes. 
 
The summit hosted 400 experts from politics and professional practice from the top 23 countries on the PISA test. The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a triennial international survey which aims to evaluate education systems worldwide by testing the skills and knowledge of 15-year-old students. To date, students representing more than 70 economies have participated in the assessment. The most recently published results are from the assessment in 2012.
