Practice tests available

The paper-based versions of the practice tests for end-of-year English language arts and performance-based tests for math will be available Jan. 23. To assist districts now with performance-based practice materials for math currently available, here are some websites where teachers can find problems to use in their instruction to help students prepare for next month’s state tests.

These instructional problems may contain any one or all of the following: multiple points of entry, multiple pathways for solving, and may contain multiple correct answers.

  • Illustrative Mathematics (www.illustrativemathematics.org) is a website created by Dr. Bill McCallum, a lead writer of the mathematics standards. The website contains problems for each of the standards across the different grade levels. These classroom problems contain suggested questions for teachers to help deepen student understanding.
  • Inside Mathematics (www.insidemathematics.org) is a website where teachers can find performance-based tasks at each grade level. The website also provides a scale for scoring. For teachers, there is a section to provide guidance on how to use the performance task to make connections to other grade level material.

The paper-based versions of practice tests for social studies and science tests, along with answer documents, will be available at the end of January. Interactive online practice tests are available here. Both the online and paper tests will cover the same content and expectations for student knowledge. While the paper versions will lack some of the convenient technology-enhanced features of the online exam, the instructions and explanations will be crafted to guide students through each item.
