This school year, more AFT education members than ever are faced with evaluating whether their lessons and resources will help students meet the Common Core State Standards. As we continue to advocate for delinking Common Core from harmful, high-stakes testing and punitive accountability measures, the AFT also is committed to helping our members access high-quality resources to support their work in the classroom.
On Share My Lesson, you can find thousands of high-quality, peer-reviewed, Common Core-aligned resources, including hundreds developed by AFT affiliates with support from the AFT Innovation Fund. Like all resources on Share My Lesson, these units are available to anyone, free of charge.
Also available on Share My Lesson is a video series called Stories of Success. Created by Student Achievement Partners, and featuring AFT teachers, Stories of Success is a unique collection of video interviews highlighting positive experiences of teachers implementing the Common Core State Standards.
- Instructional Practice Guide: Coaching and Lesson Planning Tools to help educators and those who support them, to connect the content of classroom lessons to the shifts in instructional practice embodied by the Common Core.
- A reading list to support educators’ understanding of the Common Core and offer new lessons and mini assessments to try in your classroom.
- Materials Alignment Toolkit to inform decisions about choosing instructional and assessment materials based on alignment to the shifts whether those responsible are making purchases, supplementing existing materials or providing feedback to publishers on where to make improvements.
Later this fall, achievethecore.org will debut new resources, including an Academic Word Finder tool and the Teaching the Core Video Library.
As we continue to advocate for policies that give educators the time and resources necessary to implement the standards well, these online resources will provide some much-needed support for teachers on the frontlines.
