These BOE endorsements are the result of a task that began in August after candidates filed their petitions for election. All five candidates were sent CHTU questionnaires, and all five responded. Candidates’ positions on school funding in Ohio, charter schools, No Child left Behind, student discipline, contractual issues (i.e. salary, benefits, seniority rights, grievance hearings, elementary planning time, special education support), and testing and teacher accountability were the key indicators in our endorsement decisions. The recommendations were presented to our CHTU Executive Board at our September meeting.

Personal Preferences

State Issue 3-Casinos. OFT and other education groups have not taken a position on State Issue 3. We did not consider Issue 3 in our deliberations. Gambling is a highly charged issue for many people and others really don't care at all.  However you decide to vote it is highly unlikely that gambling will solve our state budget and education funding deficiencies.Twenty years and four Supreme Court decisions later we in CH-UH continue to live with a system of funding that forces us to place levies every three years.

Sue Pardee. This year our officers and COPE Committee decided not to give Union endorsements to city council candidates. That being said, I do want to personally recommend Sue Pardee for election to the University Heights City Council. Beyond her role as the Development Coordinator for our CH-UH schools (a position in which she will continue as city council is part-time), Sue has an impeccable record as a public school and teacher advocate. She has led successful levy campaigns in our district and will be a powerful voice for our schools on the University Heights City Council. If you or any family and friends are University Heights residents, please consider supporting Sue.

Fraternally,

Tom Schmida, President
