BOE Candidates-Endorsements. The Cleveland Heights Teachers Union has endorsed Ronald Register, Kal Zucker, and Karen D. Gorman-Jones for election to the ClevelandHeights-UniversityHeights Board of Education. The Local 795 Committee On Political Education, with the approval of our Executive Board, made the recommendations after reviewing all candidates’ responses to the Union’s survey on education issues of local, state and national scope.

In addition to the large number of our members who reside in the CH-UH community, many of us have friends and relatives who are voters here.   Please ask them to consider supporting our endorsements. If you would like to see the candidates’ responses to our Union survey, contact the Union Office for copies.

The Flu. We have been informed that the district will supply all classrooms with hand sanitizer and tissue due to the heightened concerns regarding the spread of influenza viruses. These items should be in place by the second week of October.

The district will not offer flu shots. However, immunizations are a covered benefit under our health insurance plan. For more detailed information on where to get flu shots, go to our website at www.chtu.org, go to “Health Corner”, and then go to the Flu Shots article.

Special Education Concerns. We have heard from some of our Special Education Teachers that they are experiencing difficulty with the new IEP software, computer programs, and computer access. We have brought these concerns to central office administration, and we have been assured that the administration is following up as quickly as possible with the installation of the programs necessary to support teachers in writing IEP‘s and any other technology concerns.

Outside Duty. We are investigating a potential grievance due to the assignment of teachers to outside supervision duty after students are dismissed at some of our buildings.  While we know that this practice has been voluntary in some buildings, we view a mandatory assignment of outside duty as a change in a long-standing past practice.

Fraternally,

Tom Schmida, President
